It’s all about me

Yes, sometimes I use that statement as a joke. “Learn that now and it will serve you well in the future.” If true, the world would be in a sad, sad place. While I do think I can be pretty darn interesting, there must be more to this life than just me. Because one day, all that is ‘me’ will be gone.

A few years ago I attended the ACMC conference. One of the seminars was on “Cat & Dog Theology“. It hit me so square on the forehead that 2 thoughts immediately struck me.

  1. This is SO me
  2. I would love to one day teach this to other people!

Why did it impact me so much? I’m not sure. Probably because it has become apparent to me that I’m too self focused. Goodness… I have an entire blog committed to my thoughts on things. :) (Thanks for reading.) But hopefully the focus of my writing is not on ‘me’ per se but reflects how God has chosen to show Himself through the person of me.

God doesn’t need me to write out His actions or thoughts or meanings. He’s done that already in His Holy Word, the Bible. God doesn’t need me to give Him honor, or glory or worship. It says in scripture that if we don’t give Him what He is due, even the rocks will cry out declaring His glory.

Luke 19:40
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

So, who am I to try to add to it?

I am merely a child of God. One who loves Him, respects Him, and haltingly, failingly, sometimes unwillingly follows Him. The reason I do what I do and write what I write is not because God needs me to… but I need to tell others what He has done for me! It’s like telling the story of your big brother winning the championship, or that thank you speech where you say, “I couldn’t have done it without the help of…”

So yes, it’s all about ‘me’. Not because I’m someone better than others… because I can only tell how amazing God is by sharing how He has changed me. This is my story – one written and crafted by God.

It’s about me.

But it’s ALL about HIM.

  1. I’m glad to hear that others struggle with this as well.

  2. Thanks Pete!
    It’s such a never-ending struggle isn’t it?

  3. Wow – If you would really love to one day teach this to other people — God has a job for you right now! We have a church and community of young adults that need to hear about God’s Love, through the eyes of a mature peer. Us old-timers don’t seem to relate as well to the needs of the next generation as we should. So what do you say?

  4. Hey, I though I was the only one who was focussed on me… Really, I do not think I am self-conceited- more like I know how little everybody else cares about me, so I fight for me- I push my opinion forward- I speak for me…
And it is not so positive really… a lot of times, I wish I could stop and think about other people’s happiness, but how do I when I am miserable?

  5. Kagz,

I hear you on this! But I’ve also found if you make time to listen to other people’s worries… it can help to balance your own. And you realize there are many, many people in the world who feel as you do. If nothing else, reading others blogs help to make you feel less alone.

  6. Within the chasm of our mind, the only thing we have to keep us company is ourselves.
I don’t think that you have to worried about being self-centered, you’re simply self-aware (a good thing).
Just from the brief examples here on this blog, I’m quite certain that you’ve touched many lives by doing those things such as giving Him honor, glory, and worship. Your writings are beautiful and truely heart felt. Keep ‘em coming!
